A young homeless man reached out to me a few weeks ago, sharing his heart-wrenching story of survival and love. He explained that he had been living in his car with a three-month-old puppy, a little lab mix he had picked up from someone at a gas station just a week prior. With no means to care for him or provide him with food—having only one can given by a kind Petco employee—the young man felt the only option was to surrender his furry companion to a shelter. It was a painful decision, aware that this innocent puppy had already faced the uncertainty of displacement and would likely be terrified in a busy shelter filled with the sounds of barking and chaos. My heart went out to both of them, and I knew I needed to step in. I decided to take the puppy under my wing, determined to provide him with the love and stability he so desperately needed. I named him Scooter, and it didn’t take long for me to realize what a gem he was. Despite his young age, Scooter exuded a calmness that was rare for a puppy, and his affectionate nature melted my heart. He thrived around people and was especially gentle with children, making him the perfect candidate for a forever home. His friendly demeanor extended beyond humans; he got along well with other dogs and, surprisingly, even approached cats with a hopeful wag of his tail. Scooter was an energetic spirit who adored car rides and playing with his toys, showcasing his playful yet gentle character that would make him a loyal family member.
